For 11 years, students of the Bloomington High School North Habitat for Humanity chapter have been helping place families in homes throughout the Bloomington area. And as the group wraps up its 11th home, which will be dedicated in March, it appears the students have no plans to slow down. In fact, members of the chapter are currently gearing up for their annual fundraiser, which they hope will supply the money needed to build house number 12.

“This is our major fundraiser,” said Cody Allen, co-president of the North chapter. “It raises close to $30,000 every year.”

The Evening for Habitat will be 6-9 p.m. Feb. 16 at Terry’s Banquet and Catering, at 3124 N. Canterbury Court. The evening will feature a dinner and silent and live auctions.Tickets are $40 and must be purchased at North by Feb. 14.

Allen, a sophomore, has been a part of Habitat for more than a year and said the event is a great way to raise funds while spreading the word about the work being done by North students. “I would encourage everyone to come, because it’s a great night of fun, food and fundraising,” he said. “I think you really see the impact that the students are making.” Being a part of Habitat, Allen said, allows students to become involved in something that helps the community and allows them to actually see the fruits of their labor. “You can really see what a difference you are making, because you see the progression over the nine months when we are making a house,” he said.

Meagan Niese, development director for Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County, said North’s support for the organization has been incredible and much needed. “It’s invaluable to us to be able to consistently count on Bloomington High School North’s sponsorship each year,” Niese said. “For every family we put into a house, we have another three applying to the program, so the need is pretty strong. The fact that these high school students come together for another family is huge.”
