“I’ll never forget our build in El Salvador, the world we saw, and the people we met.  I encourage anyone interested to take advantage of future opportunities to journey down to El Salvador ...a trip like this has the potential to engage your soul and expand your perspective.”
–Adrian Starnes, Global Village Volunteer, 2008

Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County is not just committed to ending poverty housing in Monroe County, but also to eliminating substandard housing globally. We support our partner Habitat for Humanity affiliate in El Salvador through both volunteers and funding.

Each year, Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County sends a volunteer team to participate in a blitz build called “Christmas in Action.” These volunteers commit a week of time, travel, and sweat to building sturdy, decent homes. These homes invaluably replace unacceptable living conditions like flimsy shacks, which offer no chance of protection from the country’s frequent inclement weather. These service trips are about more than just building, they are also deeply rewarding to the individuals involved. The Salvadoran affiliate benefits from a strong partnership and our volunteers enjoy the incredible wisdom, gratitude, hospitality, and generosity of their hosts.

Since 2000, our affiliate has sent 10% of our undesignated funds every year to El Salvador in order to support their building efforts. In El Salvador, Habitat builds very simple homes, costing just $3,000-$5,000. We estimate that during that time our funds have built approximately 100 homes.
